# Alto rendimento swimming Portugal: official status explained

Alto rendimento is a Portuguese state register: the federation proposes the swimmer to the IPDJ, and families do not apply. Its three levels depend on international results, and registration must be renewed each year.

> **Idea in Brief**
> - **It is a state register.** The federation, rather than the family, proposes the swimmer to the IPDJ.
> - **The bar is international.** World and European placings set A and B, while C uses listed high-level competitions.
> - **National squads are the nearer rung.** The 2026 FPN plan set twenty Infantis places across Portugal.

The words come up beside the changing-room door: your swimmer could be *alto rendimento*. Before dinner, it can sound like a programme that needs a family decision. It doesn't. This was the law and the FPN rules in September 2026. *Alto rendimento*, high-performance status, meant appearing on a legal *registo*, or state register. Decreto-Lei n.º 272/2009 names the IDP, I. P. That body was replaced by the IPDJ, which keeps the register today. The federation proposes the swimmer to the IPDJ on its form. There is no family application. The entry must be renewed each year or all support ends at once.

There are three levels. Nível A means finishing in the first third at a world or European championship in the *escalão absoluto*, the senior class. It also covers third place or better in the class below, whose maximum age cannot exceed 19, or Olympic qualification. Nível B means the first half at senior level, or the first half or semi-final equivalent below it. Nível C requires national representation at a competition classed as *de elevado nível* under Portaria n.º 325/2010. These are international results. The great majority of federated swimmers in Portugal will never be in the frame for any of the three.

At school, registration brings a fitted timetable, justified absences and moved assessment dates. It also brings special assessment periods, a sport-based transfer, a *professor acompanhante* (named teacher) and make-up classes. All depend on school progress. It also brings priority at high-performance centres, sports medicine and special insurance. FPN rules waive the *TAC*, or qualifying time, for entered events, but make Campeonatos Nacionais compulsory. The fixed UAARE network puts *alto rendimento* at level I, national squads at II, and federation-certified talent at III. Proof lasts one year. A place needs a written dual-career commitment, while enrolment requests have priority. Because the schools are fixed, where you live matters.

The nearer rung is *seleções nacionais*, or national squads. Decreto-Lei n.º 45/2013 calls participation regular after at least three preparation or competition actions in the same discipline and season. Those swimmers can receive a similar fitted timetable, justified absences and special assessment periods without joining the register. The FPN’s 2026 Infantis plan started at 13. It set twenty places for its winter camp: the five best Portuguese girls and boys at both 13 and 14 in the national fundo ranking.

Rio Maior hosts national-squad camps. The plan put the Infantis camp there on 24 and 25 January 2026. For 2025–2028, the FPN centres are the CAR at Jamor and the CTAR at Coimbra. Each takes at most twenty swimmers, and Coimbra takes external swimmers only. Centre applications close on 30 June. Fees run for eleven months. Nível A and Projeto Olímpico/Esperanças pay nothing. Nível B pays 350 euros a month in *regime interno* (living in), or 100 euros in *regime externo* (training in from outside). A *jovem talento*, a federation talent category, pays 500 euros living in or 175 euros external. The higher the level, the lower the fee.

None of this makes *alto rendimento* a training group or a coach’s verdict on your swimmer. It isn’t permanent, and it doesn’t change the family role. The coach owns the swimming. You own the calendar and the ordinary week. A swimmer close to the register will hear from the club long before you need to do anything.

### Share it with your swimmer

Keep the label in proportion to their age:

- **Under 12 (you're driving).** *“It’s an official list. There’s nothing for us to fill in.”* A simple frame stops the label from growing.
- **12–15 (sharing the wheel).** *“The federation uses international results, and the club will tell us if it matters.”* This explains the process without setting a target.
- **16+ (they're driving).** *“If this becomes relevant, we’ll sort the school and calendar pieces with you.”* This respects their role in the decision.

### Stay aligned with your coach

The federation owns the proposal, the IPDJ keeps the register, and the coach and club track the swimming route. Ask *“Did you mean formal alto rendimento status, or a national-squad pathway?”* Then let the coach manage the swimming while you manage school and the family calendar.
