# Sports medical exam Portugal: where to book and why clubs ask

A sports medical exam in Portugal is an annual form required before a federated swimmer can enter a meet. Ask your club where to book and who confirms its FPNSystem validation.

> **Idea in Brief**
> - **One exam covers one season.** It belongs with the swimmer’s first federation registration.
> - **No validated exam means no entry.** The swimmer’s entry is rejected, even for one meet.
> - **Summer is the easier window.** Registration opens in September, before the first October meets.

The third message from the secretaria, or club office, lands at the kitchen table. It asks for the exame médico-desportivo again, though the first meet still feels weeks away. The office is asking because this one document decides whether your swimmer can be entered at all.

The *exame médico-desportivo*, or sports medical exam, is required by Portuguese law. It covers anyone registered with a recognised sports federation, or hoping to join one. That takes in every federated swimmer in Portugal. It is annual, and it belongs with the first registration of each season. The [official IPDJ page](https://ipdj.gov.pt/exame-medico-desportivo) gives the legal and medical detail. For a parent, the useful version is simpler. One exam each season, on the official form, before the club can finish the registration.

Any doctor may carry out the ordinary exam and fill in the form. The appointment may be at a health centre, a private clinic or a regional sports-medicine centre. Clubs often name the places they use. Ask the secretaria before you book. The IPDJ lists what to bring: the form and the vaccination record, fasting for the blood work, and any clinical exams the doctor finds relevant. The doctor decides what is relevant. Some cases need a sports-medicine specialist, including the sobreclassificação case below.

The repeated messages make sense once you see what happens next. The FPN’s 2026/27 competition rules say the exam must be valid on the day of the competition. It must also be entered in FPNSystem and validated there. If any part is missing, the entry is rejected. There is no exception for a single meet. The club cannot put the name through now and repair the record later.

*Sobreclassificação* means entering above the swimmer’s usual *escalão*, or age category. One escalão above uses the ordinary general assessment. Two escalões above needs the extra sobreclassificação exam. Its protocol covers a biological-age assessment, an echocardiogram, or heart ultrasound, and blood tests. It can only be done at the Lisbon or Porto sports-medicine centres, or by sports-medicine specialists. Ask the club which route applies before you book.

Timing is the easiest part to control. For the 2026/27 season, FPNSystem registration for *natação pura*, or pool swimming, opened on 15 September 2026. The first national meet of that season is on 24 October 2026. One regional opener is listed for 17–18 October 2026. The club’s own deadline comes before the first meet. That makes summer the easier window. There is time to sort a missing form before entries close. If summer has gone, ask the secretaria for its deadline and the route it accepts.

### Share it with your swimmer

Give them only the part they need to own:

- **Under 12 (you're driving).** *“A doctor signs one form so the club can enter you this season,”* which keeps the task clear and finite.
- **12–15 (sharing the wheel).** *“Your exam must be in FPNSystem before the club can enter you,”* which explains the reminders without adding worry.
- **16+ (they're driving).** *“Check when your exam needs renewing and tell me what you need from me,”* because they can own the deadline with your help.

### Stay aligned with your coach

The doctor handles the medical part, while the club office records and validates the form. The coach handles swimming. Your job is to book the appointment and ask, *“Who can confirm that the exam is valid in FPNSystem?”* Once it’s confirmed, leave the medical detail with the doctor and the training with the coach.
