# Torneio Zonal swimming: what, where and who goes

Torneio Zonal swimming is an FPN meet for swimmers who make their zone’s qualifying time; the club enters and travels with them. The host city depends on the zone and season, and each family decides who goes.

> **Idea in Brief**
> - **The Zonal is earned.** Your swimmer met the qualifying time for an FPN meet in their zone.
> - **The club runs the racing.** It files the entry, travels as a team and puts the coach in charge.
> - **The national cut is separate.** The same age group has a later championship with its own harder TAC.

The club message lands while you're clearing dinner: your swimmer made the mínimo for the Zonal. Before the plates are away, you're asking where it is and who needs to pack. That mínimo is a [TAC Zonal](https://swimtrack.ai/time-standards/portugal-fpn-tac/), the qualifying time for their escalão, or age category. For many swimmers, this is the first national-level meet they had to earn.

The Torneios Zonais are FPN competitions split into Zona Norte and Zona Sul. Two territorial associations host them on behalf of the others. There is one weekend for Juvenis and another for Infantis. The federation's 2026–27 calendar puts Juvenis on 4–6 December 2026: Zona Norte in Bragança and Zona Sul in Leiria. Infantis race on 26–28 February 2027: Zona Norte in Cantanhede and Zona Sul in Sines. These are this season's host cities. Your coach or club can tell you which zone applies. The [season calendar](https://swimtrack.ai/meets/) keeps the current dates together.

Getting in starts with a TAC Zonal swum inside the validity window named in the tournament's admission rules. The club sends the entry to the organising territorial association. The parent does not enter the swimmer. The federation's 2026–27 regulation sets the tournament across three days and five sessions. A swimmer can be entered in up to five individual events plus the relays. The coach confirms the final race list.

Across the sessions, swimmers are grouped into séries, or heats, by entry time, even when their escalões differ. A Juvenil B can race beside a Juvenil A. Placings are worked out separately by event and escalão. The top three in each event, escalão and gender receive awards. A second award uses the total World Aquatics points from five individual events. The club travels and races as a team. From arrival to the final event, the coach handles the swimming and any question about a result. Parents do not approach officials. The [first-meet guide](https://swimtrack.ai/blog/your-swimmers-first-meet) and [meet-morning guide](https://swimtrack.ai/blog/the-morning-of-a-meet) cover the routine.

Your work sits around that team structure: getting there, food, the stands and the drive home. For many families, a Zonal is the first meet that means a night away, because each zone races at one venue. Whether every parent or sibling goes is a family decision. [What this sport asks of your family](https://swimtrack.ai/blog/what-this-sport-asks-of-your-family) can help with that wider question. Later in the season, the same escalão has a Campeonato Nacional with its own harder TAC. This season, Juvenis race 2–4 April 2027 at Oeiras (Jamor). Infantis race 23–25 July 2027 at Reguengos de Monsaraz.

### Share it with your swimmer

Keep the message simple before a new kind of meet:

- **Under 12 (you're driving).** *"You earned your place. Your coach will tell you what happens at the pool."* Clear roles make the weekend easier to grasp.
- **12–15 (sharing the wheel).** *"You made the TAC. What do you want to know before the weekend?"* This gives them room to ask.
- **16+ (they're driving).** *"Tell us what support you want around the weekend."* This respects their control over preparation.

### Stay aligned with your coach

The coach and club own the entry and every racing decision. You own getting there, food, the stands and the drive home, so ask beforehand: *"Which zone are we in, and what does the club need from us?"* Once the team arrives, leave the poolside choices with the coach.
