# Swimming club fees in Portugal: what each charge pays for

Swimming club fees in Portugal include joining, membership and training charges, while registration, entries and insurance may also appear on the bill. Labels and payment schedules vary by club.

> **Idea in Brief**
> - **The labels can move.** Jóia, quota and mensalidade do not mean the same thing on every club sheet.
> - **Some money leaves the club.** Registration, entries and insurance can sit inside the season’s bill.
> - **Small clauses change the total.** Family discounts and late charges may matter as much as the headline fee.

The enrolment sheet is open on the kitchen table. Three charges sit beside three Portuguese words, with no clear map between them. The useful question is what each line buys. A label alone may mislead you because clubs use these words in different ways.

The one-off payment to join as a member is a jóia. The member’s own subscription is a quota. The monthly training fee is a mensalidade. Yet the labels can move. Clube Fluvial Portuense’s 2025/26 swimming-school sheet puts its €35 joining charge under inscrição. It bundles a jóia, accident insurance and a user card. The same sheet calls its monthly school fee a quota. Amarra ao Cais — Clube de Natação’s 2026/27 swimming-school rules keep quota for the member’s subscription. They set it at €0,75 a month for swimmers aged six months to seventeen. Read the line, not the noun.

Louletano Desportos Clube Natação’s published 2026/27 competition-group sheet gives one worked example. Pré-Competição twice a week costs €30 a month. Cadetes three times a week and the older competition group cost €35. The enrolment fee, or matrícula, includes annual sports insurance. A renewal is €27. This is one club, in one town, using one municipal pool. There is no national price. This site does not publish an average because no source holds one.

Some of the bill pays for the season beyond the club. Federation registration, or filiação, is bought per swimmer and season. The Associação de Natação do Interior Centro’s 2025/26 table charges €6 per federated athlete. It lists €2,15 per individual entry for Infantil, Juvenil or Absoluto swimmers. FPN sports insurance, or seguro desportivo, is €3 per person. Each of the thirteen territorial associations sets its own table. These figures come from one association and one season. [What federado means](https://swimtrack.ai/blog/federado-what-it-means) explains what the registration does.

The paperwork explains why some costs arrive before racing starts. FPN Circular n.º 05/26 of 21 August 2026 says registrations are approved only after the insurance list arrives with proof of payment. A valid sports medical exam, or exame médico-desportivo, is also required for each new registration and renewal. The IPDJ says the insurance is accepted only after that exam. The guides to the [sports medical exam](https://swimtrack.ai/blog/the-sports-medical-exam) and [sports insurance](https://swimtrack.ai/blog/sports-insurance-what-it-covers) cover those steps. Part of the September bill buys your swimmer’s season before it begins.

The smaller clauses can move the final cost. Clube Fluvial Portuense’s 2025/26 swimming-school sheet cuts the lowest monthly fee by 50% when three direct family members share a household. Amarra ao Cais — Clube de Natação’s 2026/27 swimming-school rules add €1,50 from the 9th to the 15th and €3,00 after the 15th. No source supports a national price or a test for whether a fee is fair. Ask the club office for this season’s dated price sheet. Mark which lines happen once and which repeat. ### Share it with your swimmer

How much they need to know changes as they grow:

- **Under 12 (you're driving).** *“The club bill is for the adults to handle.”* This keeps the cost away from the youngest swimmer.
- **12–15 (sharing the wheel).** *“The club is paid for your season, including some costs beyond training.”* This gives context without handing over the worry.
- **16+ (they're driving).** *“Let’s read the fee sheet together and mark what repeats.”* This gives them a clear share of the admin.

### Stay aligned with your coach

The club office handles fees, membership and registration paperwork, while the coach handles training and meet entries. Ask the office: *“Could you send me this season’s dated price sheet and mark which charges happen once and which repeat?”* Keep payment questions with the office and training questions with the coach.
