# Qualifying for the European and Junior European Championships

If you came here looking for a table of European qualifying times, the honest answer is that there isn't one, and no page anywhere can give you one. It doesn't exist — and that's a genuinely useful thing to know.

European Aquatics (LEN)Updated July 2026

The regulation

## What the regulations actually say

> Entries shall be accepted regardless of standards, but they shall include entry times.
>
> European Aquatics general event rules

That clause appears, in near-identical wording, in the regulations for the senior long course Championships, the short course Championships, the U23 Championships and the Junior Championships. Four tiers, same rule. There is no minimum time a swimmer must have achieved to be entered for a European Championships.

## How entry works instead

The mechanism is quotas and national selection, not a floor.

- A federation may enter up to four swimmers per event, of whom two may advance past the heats.
- Lanes are seeded from each swimmer's own submitted entry time — any legitimate time from the last 15 months, swum in a 50m pool for the long course Championships.
- There is no lower limit on that entry time.

So the entry time decides where a swimmer is seeded, and nothing more.

## What that means for a family

Your federation's selection criteria are the real gate. Every national federation runs its own selection for European teams, with its own standards, its own trials meet and its own discretion. Those criteria are usually far stricter than anything LEN imposes, precisely because LEN imposes nothing.

If you want to know what it would actually take, the number to find is your own federation's — and then the selection policy published alongside its national trials. LEN caps how many can go. Your federation decides who.

This is also why there is no table on this page. We'd rather show you an accurate absence than a plausible-looking invention, and a made-up "European cut" is exactly the kind of number that circulates in club WhatsApp groups for years.

The meets

## The two championships

Dates, venues and age bands as the current regulations state them. Munich has already been swum (it ran 7 to 12 July 2026) and Paris follows in August. The same no-standard rule applies to both.

 European Aquatics Championships - Paris 2026 31 Jul - 16 Aug 2026 (swimming: 10-16 Aug 2026) · Centre Aquatique Olympique, Saint-Denis (Paris), France

European Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships - Munich 2026 7-12 Jul 2026 · Olympic Swimming Hall (1972 Olympic Park), Munich, Germany

The Junior Championships age band is 14 to 18 by 31 December of the competition year, and in the current regulations that band is the same for boys and girls. Older cycles used different bands by gender, which is why you'll still see conflicting figures in circulation.

## World Juniors works the same way

The World Junior Championships, run in odd years, has no qualifying time either. We checked the official documents rather than assuming: the age band is 14 to 18 by 31 December of the championship year, again identical for both sexes; there's a qualifying date window rather than a qualifying time; and each federation may enter a maximum of two swimmers per event, capped at 26 men and 26 women overall.

That's the whole system: a date window, a quota and an age band.

## Reading an absence correctly

It can be a relief to learn that the wall you were bracing against isn't there. What replaces it is harder in its own way: a selection decision made by people, using criteria you don't control, at a meet on a fixed date.

That's worth being straight with a swimmer about. Selection is a different kind of goal from a cut — it's not fully theirs to own, which is exactly why it makes a poor season target. The times at their own national championships are theirs.

Questions

## Common questions

### What are the qualifying times for the European Championships in swimming?

There aren't any. The European Aquatics regulations state that entries are accepted regardless of standards; each federation may enter up to four swimmers per event and seeds them by their submitted entry times.

### How does a swimmer get selected for the European Championships?

Through their national federation's own selection process, which normally runs off a national trials meet and its published criteria. That process is what a swimmer is actually competing against.

### Is there a qualifying time for the European Junior Championships?

No. The Junior Championships regulations carry the same "regardless of standards" clause as the senior ones. Eligibility is an age band (14 to 18 by 31 December of the competition year, the same for both genders) plus a federation quota.

### What about the World Junior Championships?

Also quota-based, with no time standard. The official documents specify an age band of 14 to 18 by 31 December, a qualifying date window, and a maximum of two swimmers per event per federation.

The lookup

## Where does your swimmer actually stand?

Find the standard that actually applies — your swimmer's own federation's qualifying times, and how close they are to each one.
