Time standards, explained

# What do B, BB, A, AA, AAA and AAAA actually mean?

A time standard is a published time that means something. Somebody, usually a national federation, has decided that this number, for this event, this age and this pool length, marks a line, and printed it in a table. What trips parents up is that there are two completely different kinds of line.

Family one

## Motivational standards are rungs

Nobody guards them, no meet checks them at the door, and hitting one doesn't get your swimmer into anything by itself. They exist so a young swimmer has a next thing to chase that isn't beating another child.

USA Swimming's set is the canonical example, and the one everyone means by "time standards" in English: B, BB, A, AA, AAA, AAAA, slowest to fastest, six rungs for every event in every age group and every pool length.

**One event, one age group, six levels — girls 11-12, 100 yards freestyle**

| Event | B | BB | A | AA | AAA | AAAA |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 100 yd Free | 1:14.69 | 1:09.39 | 1:03.99 | 1:01.39 | 58.69 | 55.99 |

Read left to right they're a scale of difficulty; read as a plan they're a season. A swimmer sitting just under BB in three events has three visible, near-term things to work on — which is precisely the point of publishing them.

Clubs and regional bodies then borrow the ladder for their own purposes ("a BB meet", "AAA finals"), which is where the confusion starts: the standard itself is just a number on a national chart; the entry rules are local.

## Championship cuts are doors

Swim the time inside the right window and your swimmer is in; don't, and usually they aren't. Every serious swimming nation runs a version — Portugal's TAC, Spain's marcas mínimas, Germany's Qualifikationszeiten for the DJM, France's grille de qualification, Italy's tempi limite, and the American Futures, Junior National and National cuts.

Cuts come with conditions motivational standards never have: a validity window (the time must be swum between two dates), a pool-length rule (usually no converting between 25m and 50m), and an approved-meet rule (a fast swim at the wrong meet doesn't count). Whenever a family is surprised by a qualification, it's nearly always one of those three conditions.

## How the numbers get set

Two broad methods, worth knowing because they explain why the tables feel different. Some federations set each cut as a percentage above a reference time — Portugal is the clearest case, where every TAC is derived from one absolute reference for that event with each age category sitting a published percentage above it. Others publish standards per age group directly, tuned to land at roughly the level they want the meet to be. That's how the American motivational levels and most European championship tables are built.

Either way, one thing is constant: standards are age-banded. Your swimmer is measured against a table for their category, and when they move up a category the table gets harder overnight. On paper it can look like going backwards; it isn't.

## Reading a standard without it becoming a verdict

Here is a real thing that happens. A kid drops two seconds, has the best swim of her life, and cries in the car because she missed the cut by four tenths. What she's been handed, without anyone intending it, is a number that only measures the shortfall.

Both of these are true after that race: "four tenths off the cut" and "two seconds faster than she has ever swum." The standard is a checkpoint on a road, not a scoreboard — and which of those it becomes depends almost entirely on which sentence the adults in the car say first.

The other half of the picture is developmental. A swimmer who has just started seeing what they can't do yet often stalls on the clock for a season while something important rebuilds underneath. Standards can't see that; you can.

Questions

## Common questions

### What is a AAA time in swimming?

The fifth of USA Swimming's six motivational levels — faster than AA, slower than AAAA. It's a national reference standard for a swimmer's age group, event and pool length. On its own it doesn't enter anyone into a meet, though clubs and regional championships often use the levels to set their own entry rules.

### What does BB mean in swimming?

BB is the second rung of the same ladder, one step above B. For most age-group swimmers it's the first standard that feels like a real target: reachable within a season, and a visible step up from where they started.

### Is a B time bad?

No. B is the entry rung of a national scale that tops out at world-class, and a great many swimmers spend a happy year there. What matters far more than the letter is whether the times are moving, and whether the swimmer knows which specific thing they're working on next.

### Can a time from a 25m pool count for a 50m championship?

Usually not. Most federations require the qualifying time to be swum in the same pool length as the championship, and several say so in the regulation in as many words. Spain, Italy and the United States (via its published yards/meters equivalents) are partial exceptions, and their pages explain exactly how.

### Where do I check which standards my swimmer already meets?

In the standards lookup — one time in, every applicable standard out, for eight systems.
