These are the fastest published qualifying times in the sport, and almost nobody reading this site is aiming at them. For the 2027 Championships in Budapest, both were published in March 2026, covering 17 individual events for each gender. The B standard is exactly 3.5% slower than the A, every event, every gender. That's a rare piece of transparency in a sport full of opaque tables, and it means once you know one number you know the other. Relays appear in the document as events but carry no A or B time. Relay qualification runs through a separate mechanism (team selection and world-ranking based) rather than an individual cut. ## How entry actually works A standard is not an entry ticket for an individual. Nations enter swimmers, and the standards govern how many they may enter. For Budapest 2027, World Aquatics has so far published the hard ceiling — at most two swimmers per federation per individual event, one relay team per relay, 26 men and 26 women overall. - A federation may enter two swimmers in an event only when both hold the A standard. - With the B standard, it may enter one. - Universality places allow federations without any qualified swimmer to be represented, so the Championships aren't limited to the same two dozen countries. Which means the real gate for almost every swimmer is not the World Aquatics table at all. It's their own federation's selection, usually decided at a national trials meet. When they appear they follow the same shape as the World Championship ones (an A standard, a B standard, national quotas and universality places) and this page will carry them. We haven't printed estimates in the meantime. ## Putting these numbers where they belong Read as targets, these numbers do damage. A 14-year-old comparing a personal best to a World Championship A standard learns nothing except that they are far away, which they already knew. The comparison that actually informs anything is against themselves. If you want a single number that positions a swim on the same continuous scale these standards sit on, without the cliff edge, that's World Aquatics points: the A standards live up near the top of a scale your swimmer is already measured on, which is a far kinder way to see the distance than a raw time comparison. The A standard is the faster of the two: under the rules used at recent Championships, a federation may enter two swimmers in an event only when both hold the A time, and one swimmer with the B time. For Budapest 2027 the B time is exactly 3.5% slower than the A time in every event. ### How do you qualify for the World Championships in swimming? By swimming a World Aquatics A or B standard within the qualification period and being selected by your national federation, which usually means finishing high enough at a national trials meet. The standard makes a swimmer eligible; the federation decides who goes. ### Are there Olympic qualifying times for the next Games? Not published as of July 2026. They're normally released ahead of the qualification window and follow the same A/B structure as the World Championship standards. ### Why are there no relay standards? Relay places are allocated through a separate mechanism based on team selection and world rankings, not through an individual qualifying time, so the document lists the relay events without printing a cut.
