World Aquatics points

# What are World Aquatics points, and how are they calculated?

Swimming has one problem every parent runs into by the second season: nothing compares to anything. A 33.4 in the 50 breaststroke and a 5:41 in the 400 freestyle are two unrelated facts. World Aquatics points are the answer to that — one swim, one score, every swim on the same scale.

The maths

## The formula, and the idea behind it

Every event has a base time: the benchmark performance for that event, gender and course. A swim is scored against it.

P = 1000 × (B ÷ T)³

**B is the base time. T is your swimmer's time. Swim the base time exactly and you score 1000.**

Everything else falls away from there — and it falls away cubed, which is the part worth understanding. If your swimmer is 10% slower than the base time they don't score 900; they score about 751. At 20% slower it's about 579, and at 30% slower about 455.

The consequence is the useful bit: the same percentage improvement is worth more points the faster you already are. That isn't unfairness built into the maths, it's the maths describing something true — every tenth costs more than the one before it. For a developing swimmer the curve looks flat-ish early and then starts to reward the hard-won seconds properly.

Freshness

## Base times change every year

The base times are republished annually. The current edition is the 2026 set: the long-course table runs the calendar year, and the short-course table runs a season, September to August, named for the year it starts in. A 2027 edition doesn't exist yet.

That means a swim can score two or three points differently in two different years. The swim didn't change; the yardstick did. Worth knowing before you compare a score from 2024 against one from this season.

## Why everyone still calls them FINA points

The sport's governing body used to be called FINA, and the points were named after it. The organization is now World Aquatics; the points are officially World Aquatics points; and half the swimming world, including most search boxes, still says FINA points, pontos FINA, puntos FINA, points FINA, punti FINA. If a coach hands you a FINA score, nothing has been lost in translation.

Reading a score

## What a score roughly means

There is no official scale of point levels, so treat these as informal signposts, and treat any single score as one day's information.

1. 950+ World class World class.
2. 850–949 International level International.
3. 750–849 National level National level.
4. 650–749 Championship level Competitive at a national age-group championship.
5. 550–649 Club level Solid club level.
6. 400–549 Developing Developing. The technique is landing and the times are moving.
7. 0–399 Starting out Learning the event. Common and completely normal at 10 and 11.

The number a parent should actually watch is the direction of travel across a season, and which of your swimmer's own events scores highest — that one is often a surprise, and it is frequently not the event they think of as theirs.

## Points are a ruler

A World Aquatics score compares your swimmer to the fastest human being who has ever swum that event. Read carelessly, that's a machine for making a 12-year-old feel small. Read properly, it's the only tool that tells you their 200 backstroke improved more this season than the freestyle everyone talks about.

The framing that keeps it useful is the one we use everywhere on this site: measure the gain, not the gap. Same number, aimed forward.

## Points are not qualifying times

No federation admits a swimmer to a championship on World Aquatics points. Entry runs on the event's own qualifying time — the TAC in Portugal, marcas mínimas in Spain, Qualifikationszeiten in Germany, and so on.

Watch out for the national points tables too, which are different systems wearing similar words: France's cotation FFN and Germany's Rudolph points are federation-specific scales, not World Aquatics points, and they can't be compared to them.

## Common questions

### What are FINA points in swimming?

The old name for World Aquatics points — a single score, from a cubed comparison against a benchmark base time, that lets any swim be compared to any other swim regardless of stroke, distance, gender or age. The formula and the name changed at different times, so both names are still in daily use.

### How do I calculate World Aquatics points by hand?

Divide the base time for that event, gender and course by your swimmer's time, cube the result, and multiply by 1000. Both times must be in the same units, and both must be the same pool length. Our lookup does it against the current base times so the edition is never out of date.

### Do World Aquatics points change every year?

The formula doesn't; the base times do. They're reissued annually, so the same swim can be worth slightly different points in different years. Long-course base times run the calendar year, short-course ones run September to August.

### What is a good points score for a 13-year-old?

There's no single answer, because it depends on the event, the country and the kid. A more useful question: is the score higher than it was last season, and which of their events scores best? Those two answers tell you more than any threshold.

### What to know about this transcription

- WJC\_2025\_ENTRY, EA\_SENIOR\_LCM\_ENTRY and EA\_JUNIOR\_2026\_ENTRY are standardSets with ZERO cells by design -- both World Aquatics (Junior Worlds) and European Aquatics (senior + junior Europeans) select teams by Member Federation quota and ranking-based lane seeding, NOT a universal published qualifying time.
