Away swim meet travel: who goes and what to organise

Away swim meet travel usually starts with the club: your swimmer travels with the club, while your family decides who else goes. Save the date, wait for the coach’s confirmation, then check the programme before arranging nights and transport.

Idea in Brief

  • The dates are already published. September’s calendar shows the away weekends for the year.
  • The swimmer travels with the club. The coach confirms which weekends apply and takes charge at the meet.
  • The rest of the family chooses. Going too is a family decision, with no duty attached.

The calendar is open on the kitchen table, with Bragança circled and Setúbal far below it. Nobody yet knows whether one parent, everyone, or only the swimmer will make the trip. The useful fact is that the full calendar is already there. For 2026/27, the FPN calendar names each competition, city, date and entry deadline. The same dates appear on the site’s meets page, where you can save the meets that may concern your swimmer.

  • Torneios Zonais de Juvenis: 4 to 6 December 2026, in Bragança for Zona Norte and Leiria for Zona Sul.
  • Campeonatos Nacionais de Juniores e Seniores, piscina curta (25-metre pool): 10 to 13 December 2026, Tomar.
  • Torneios Zonais de Infantis: 26 to 28 February 2027, in Cantanhede for Zona Norte and Sines for Zona Sul.
  • Campeonato Nacional de Juvenis: 2 to 4 April 2027, Oeiras (Jamor).
  • Campeonatos Nacionais de Juniores, Sub-21 e Absolutos, Open de Portugal: 8 to 11 April 2027, Coimbra.
  • Campeonato Nacional de Infantis: 23 to 25 July 2027, Reguengos de Monsaraz.

These dates show what could happen. An escalão is the swimmer’s age category. Which dates apply depends on that category and, for zonal and national championships, on a qualifying time. The club enters the swimmer, so there is no entry form for a family to submit. The coach usually knows first. Wait for that confirmation before deciding who else will travel.

The calendar also shows when entries close. Entries for Tomar close on 1 December 2026, before the meet from 10 to 13 December 2026. Entries for the Juvenis championship close on 23 March 2027, before the Oeiras meet from 2 to 4 April 2027. Three or four days of sessions will usually mean at least two nights for most families. Before settling your plan, read the meet’s regulamento, or rules document. It carries the programme and session times.

The swimmer usually travels with the club. From arrival until their last event, the coach is in charge of the swimmer. The family’s choice is whether anyone else goes. There is no duty to turn it into a full-family weekend. Compulsory sports insurance is accident cover for training, competition and related travel inside or outside Portugal, with legal minimum amounts; it isn’t travel insurance.

For everyone else, the practical work is mostly a date and a car: decide who is going and how they will get there. The useful parts of a two-night trip are the same ones that help at a nearby pool. Follow the existing guidance on food for a long meet day, keep the morning familiar, and protect sleep. Once your swimmer joins the team at the pool, let the coach run the competition.

Share it with your swimmer

Give them only what is settled now:

  • Under 12 (you’re driving). “The coach will tell us if this meet is yours, and we’ll sort the trip.” This gives them one clear next step.
  • 12–15 (sharing the wheel). “We’ve saved the date. When the coach confirms it, we’ll decide who is going.” This keeps the unknowns with the adults.
  • 16+ (they’re driving). “Once the coach confirms the meet, tell us what support you want for the trip.” This leaves more of the planning with them.

Stay aligned with your coach

The club handles entry, and the coach handles your swimmer at the meet. You handle the rest of your family’s travel decision. If anything is unclear, ask “Is this meet part of their programme, and what does the club need from us?” and use the answer for your own arrangements.
