About
Liam picked up competitive swimming a few years ago. The dreams came first. The commitment that matched them came right behind. I've been trying to keep up ever since.
The story
His mornings start before mine. Double practices. Late drives home. The kind of grit you can't coach into a kid. And so you want to nurture it everywhere you can.
So I did what most swim parents do. I volunteered. I became an official. I ended up president of our local club. When he asked for harder training, we changed teams. When he asked again, we changed again. I learned the deck by walking it for hours, and when I sat in the stands, I inevitably had a sheet with start times and seeds and lanes that I pored through and cheered when he and his teammates swam.
But meets aren't all highs. They're full of confusion — heat sheets you can't read, splits you can't compare, qualifying cuts that move under your feet. And for every high there are corresponding lows — a false-start in a relay, a DQ on your best event, a mental meltdown on the blocks. And as a dad I wanted to fix it, but every time I tried I seemed to be making it worse.

What I learned
So, after fumbling my way around the internet and finding a wealth of resources and knowledge, I was able to improve my role as a swim parent. I was able to shift more into the role of a support parent, and away from being a pressure parent. Learned when to speak and when to be quiet, what words to use to help anchor the learnings, what words to use to help him work through the disappointments. But it was hard work to figure all that out. So I decided to consolidate it, and build out an easier resource for parents.
