Desporto Escolar swimming: how it differs from club swimming

Desporto Escolar swimming is separate from club swimming, and your swimmer can do both. Each has its own registration, age groups, calendar and rules.

Idea in Brief

  • These are two separate systems. The school runs one, while clubs and the FPN run the other.
  • Their age groups differ. The school swimming rules state that they do not match the FPN’s groups.
  • Your swimmer can join both. Each system has its own entry, calendar and competition rules.

The school noticeboard has a sign-up sheet for a swimming grupo-equipa (team group). Your kid already races for a club, so it looks like the same system under another name. It isn’t. Desporto Escolar sits inside the school’s Clube de Desporto Escolar (school sports club). A Physical Education teacher runs the group. The school Director applies for its plan. Federated swimming belongs to the club and the FPN, as this guide to Portuguese swimming explains.

School entry does not need a qualifying time. It needs permission from the encarregado de educação (the parent or guardian on record). The school also keeps proof that the student is fit for sport, or a signed responsibility form. The programme describes its offer as free for every student. If the seguro escolar (school insurance) does not cover someone, compulsory sports insurance must cover them. Federated swimmers need an FPN licence. Bigger meets may also require a qualifying time.

The age groups do not match. In the 2025-2026 school year, each Desporto Escolar escalão (age category) covered several birth years. Infantil A covered 2015–2017. Infantil B covered 2013–2014. Iniciado covered 2011–2012. Juvenil covered 2008–2010. Júnior covered 2004–2007. For the FPN’s 2026/27 season, Infantis B was 2014 and Infantis A was 2013. Juvenis B was 2012 and Juvenis A was 2011. Juniores covered 2009–2010. Seniores began at 2008. The school rulebook states that its groups do not match official FPN groups.

A school group has three skill levels: Iniciação, Elementar and Avançado. Beginners and club swimmers can share the same group. Only Avançado events lead to regional and national school championships. The local phase runs from October to June. It must include at least three meetings. Each student must swim at least two. Events take place during school hours where possible.

The systems meet in two places. School races follow FPN technical rules, with changes for school pools and officials. «DE Competição+» is different. Its selected school groups race regularly and only in federated events. The teacher in charge needs a valid coaching title. Those groups do not normally enter official Desporto Escolar races.

A swimmer can join both regular systems. One registration does not complete the other. If your school lacks a suitable group, another school may accept your swimmer under a school agreement. Entry for regional and national school championships closes on 15 March of that school year.

Share it with your swimmer

Keep the difference simple:

  • Under 12 (you’re driving). “School swimming and club swimming have different races.” Clear labels make the week easier to follow.
  • 12–15 (sharing the wheel). “You can do both, but each has its own rules.” They can start tracking two calendars.
  • 16+ (they’re driving). “Check both schedules before you commit.” They can take more ownership of their time.

Stay aligned with your coach

The club coach sets the club plan. The school teacher runs the school group. Ask them together: “How will these two schedules fit this term?” You can manage the calendar while they discuss the training load.
