Infantis A swimming events: the 200s and the 400 IM

Infantis A swimming events include 200-metre races and 400 Estilos when your swimmer moves from shorter local programmes into the FPN national programme. Infantis B shares the events, but Infantis A qualifying times are tighter.

Idea in Brief

  • The category didn’t add long races. Infantis B and Infantis A share one national programme.
  • The qualifying column changed. Infantis A times are tighter even when the events stay the same.
  • Growth can scramble the clock. Patience helps while the coach learns which strokes may fit.

The start list shows 200 Mariposa beside your kid’s name. Last year, the meets you watched seemed full of 50s. Yet the longer races didn’t arrive because your swimmer moved from Infantis B to Infantis A.

In the Federação Portuguesa de Natação (FPN) regulation for 2026/27, both categories swim the same national programme. The move was from shorter club and regional programmes, set by the associação or host club, into the national Infantis programme. That programme included 400 Estilos, 800 and 1500 Livres, and the 200 of each stroke. The exact programme for any meet comes from its regulamento (rules document), not memory.

For the 2026/27 época desportiva (sports season), the FPN’s regulamento sets Infantis A as the 2013 birth year. The FPN set the start of the 2026/27 season for natação pura at 15 September 2026. An escalão (age category) follows the year on the birth certificate. It stays fixed for the season, so a birthday changes nothing.

The coach chooses each prova (event) and enters your swimmer. Parents don’t enter meets or contact the FPN or the associação about entries. Coaches often use the wider programme to see how a swimmer handles longer races and which strokes may suit them over time. A 200 Mariposa can be part of that search rather than a verdict about where your kid belongs. For most swimmers, the answer to whether one stroke should take over is still: not yet.

The regulation shows the main change between Infantis B and Infantis A: a separate, tighter qualifying column. Tempo de Acesso à Competição (TAC) is called mínimos (qualifying times) in everyday use. The time must already have been swum at an official meet. Training doesn’t count. The FPN qualifying times are listed by event, escalão, and sex.

The Torneio Zonal de Infantis runs from 26 to 28 February 2027. The Campeonato Nacional de Infantis runs from 23 to 25 July 2027. Each meet’s regulamento states which pool it uses; last season the Zonal was piscina curta (25 metres) and the national piscina longa (50 metres). They run the same programme, and each has its own Infantis A column and its own qualifying window. The July meet can offer a second chance after the Zonal if an official time falls inside its stated window.

Growth tends to arrive on different schedules. Physical maturity can vary by roughly two to three years inside one birth year, so the biggest swimmer today is not reliably the fastest one later. For many kids, times can drop or stall while bodies change, so a flat clock needs context. Your useful job is patience with the 200s and 400 Estilos. Let the coach read the races while your swimmer gets used to them.

Share it with your swimmer

Keep the message simple and leave event choices with the coach:

  • Under 12 (you’re driving). “The longer race is one race, and your coach will help you learn it.” This makes the distance feel manageable.
  • 12–15 (sharing the wheel). “You still have time before choosing a stroke.” This eases the pressure to specialise.
  • 16+ (they’re driving). “Tell me what you learned when you’re ready.” This leaves the timing with them.

Stay aligned with your coach

The coach chooses the event and makes the entry; your job is patience before and after the meet. Ask, “What are you hoping to learn from this 200?” Then leave race selection and feedback with the coach.
