Swimming and school in Portugal: exam dates and meet absences
Swimming and school in Portugal overlap on six school days in the 2026/27 national meet calendar; exam dates are still pending. Meet absences need school approval; the August special sitting covers only high-performance and national-squad swimmers.
Idea in Brief
- Six school days collide. The 2026/27 national meets take six days from term across the full season.
- Meet absences need school approval. An ordinary federado asks in writing before the known date.
- August relief is narrow. Only alto rendimento and seleções nacionais swimmers qualify for the special sitting.
In September, the school planner lies between the 2026/27 school calendar and the FPN meet list. This is the pressure described in the Juniores season. This is how the rules and calendars stood in September 2026. The first term starts between 11 and 15 September. For cursos científico-humanísticos, the general academic secondary courses, it starts on 21 September. It ends 15 December. The second term runs from 4 January to 19 March. The third runs from 5 April to 4 June for school years 9.º, 11.º and 12.º. The breaks are 16 to 31 December, 8 to 10 February, and 22 March to 2 April. Sleep is the one exam-term lever you hold.
The 2026/27 national season takes six school days. Torneio Zonal de Juvenis, 4 to 6 December 2026: Friday, one. Short-course Campeonatos Nacionais de Juniores e Seniores, 10 to 13 December 2026 in Tomar: Thursday and Friday, two. Torneio Zonal de Infantis, 26 to 28 February 2027: Friday, one. Campeonato Nacional de Juvenis, 2 to 4 April 2027 in Oeiras: none, because 2 April closes the Easter break. Open de Portugal, 8 to 11 April 2027 in Coimbra: Thursday and Friday, two. Campeonato Nacional de Infantis, 23 to 25 July 2027, and the summer Juvenis, Juniores e Seniores meet, 29 July to 1 August 2027, fall after classes end.
Assessment years differ. The provas de Monitorização da Aprendizagem, or learning checks, are for the 4.º and 6.º anos. The 9.º has provas finais, or final tests. Exames finais nacionais, or national final exams, fall in the 11.º ano for two-year subjects and the 12.º for three-year subjects. Last year’s first secondary phase ran from 16 to 26 June 2026. The 9.º ano sat Português on 17 June and Matemática on 22 June. The second phase ran from 16 to 22 July. The 2026/27 exam dates are not published yet. A separate despacho will set them; the 2025/26 one was signed 7 December 2025. No named meet can yet be matched to a named exam.
An ordinary meet absence isn’t automatically justified. The Estatuto do Aluno e Ética Escolar is the school attendance law. Under it, an ordinary federado, or registered club swimmer, uses the sports route when the school considers the event relevant. The law lists alta competição, or high-level competition, separately. Approval rests on the school’s judgement and its regulamento interno, or internal rules. Send a written request to the diretor de turma, or class head, before a known date, naming the day and lesson. Outside the 1.º ciclo, unjustified absences are capped at twice the weekly lesson periods in that subject.
The exam-season measure is an época especial, or special sitting, in August. It is only for two groups, and only when exams overlap competition. One is alunos praticantes desportivos de alto rendimento, or registered high-performance athletes. The other is alunos de seleções nacionais, or national-squad swimmers. Apply to the school director by 29 May. The JNE asks the IPDJ to confirm status and competition dates. The timetable appears in the second half of July. Exams run up to the third week of August in one phase with one sitting. The deposit is 25 euros and is returned after the exams. A swimmer on neither the IPDJ register nor a national squad list has no right to this.
Share it with your swimmer
Keep the message on the dates and the next step.
- Under 12 (you’re driving). “This meet falls on a school day, so I’ll tell your teacher beforehand.” One clear next step is enough.
- 12–15 (sharing the wheel). “Let’s put your meet dates beside the school calendar now.” Shared planning makes the six days visible.
- 16+ (they’re driving). “Check these dates with me before we send the request.” They can own the diary while you handle the school process.
Stay aligned with your coach
The coach decides the training week; the school and JNE set the exam timetable. You compare dates, ask “Can the club send us the meet regulamento now?”, and send the written request before the meet. That keeps training with the coach and school paperwork with you.
